Metric thread basics for hardware research

A practical guide to reading diameter, pitch, tolerance and mating-thread requirements before comparing products or manufacturers.

START WITH THREE QUESTIONS

What a careful reader should establish.

  1. Is the thread designation complete?
  2. Are pitch and tolerance class stated?
  3. Do the external and internal threads form an approved fit?
01

Diameter alone does not define a thread

A metric thread callout should be read as a system of nominal diameter, pitch, tolerance and, where relevant, handedness. Product names and marketplace titles often omit fields that matter to fit and inspection.

  • Nominal diameter and pitch
  • External or internal thread
  • Tolerance class and thread direction
02

Separate thread geometry from product geometry

The thread standard does not necessarily define the bolt head, screw length, washer face or complete product. Confirm the dimensional product standard and every referenced thread document using the current controlled edition.

  • Thread standard and edition
  • Product dimensional standard
  • Gauging and inspection requirement
