Material grades for hardware buyers

Understand why stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, brass and aluminium require more than a generic material label.

START WITH THREE QUESTIONS

What a careful reader should establish.

  1. Is the grade named in an accepted designation system?
  2. Are chemistry and mechanical properties both required?
  3. What evidence must accompany each lot?
01

Generic material names hide important differences

Terms such as stainless steel or alloy steel describe broad families. A purchasing specification should name a grade, condition, applicable material standard and required test evidence.

  • Grade and designation system
  • Heat treatment or condition
  • Chemical and mechanical test requirements
02

Match material to the operating environment

Strength, corrosion, temperature, conductivity, magnetic response and compatibility can all affect suitability. Engineering approval remains essential for safety-critical use.

  • Service temperature and load
  • Corrosion and chemical exposure
  • Galvanic and material compatibility
